Summer in the South Bay – Our Picks for Fun in The Sun in Hermosa Beach

Summer is in full swing, and now that the Fourth of July has come and gone it’s the perfect time to savor living by the sea in the picturesque city of Hermosa Beach. To wrap up our “Summer in the South Bay” series, here are some “don’t miss” activities to enjoy in this friendly, walkable community:

AVP Junior California Championships

Beginning today at 1 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach will host the AVP Junior California Championships. Come cheer on these talented young players as they compete in one of the most prominent tournaments in beach volleyball. A four-star event on the AVP America tour, this event features girls and boys from all over the country (ages 12 through 18) as they battle for ranking and points one match at a time… bring your beach chairs and umbrellas and enjoy some of the best youth beach volleyball in the country.
(See www.avpamerica.com for more information, participants and current athlete rankings.)

The International Surf Festival

As mentioned in our post on Manhattan Beach (read here), the “world-renowned” International Surf Festival will take place this year from July 28 through August 1. Participants from ages 8 to 80 are challenged in a variety of events including the Judge Taplin Lifeguard Medley Relay, the Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim and the Charlie Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament. Other events include surf and paddleboard contests, a beach run and a bodysurfing contest. Don’t miss this storied event! Registration is now open. See you on the beach!
(See www.surffestival.org for registration and more details.)

Farmer’s Market

The weekly Certified Farmer’s Market takes place every Friday from 12:00pm until 4:00pm at Valley Drive and 11th. A mainstay for many years, this charming local market run by the Hermosa Beach Rotary offers the best in fresh produce and organic fare, as well as homemade goods and crafts. Easy parking and friendly vendors make this a must-visit for locals and visitors alike.
(1035 Valley Drive, see www.hermosabeachfarmersmarket.org for more information.)

Fiesta Hermosa Locale

This year, a favorite local event is back for Labor Day weekend! Now called Fiesta Hermosa Locale and a bit modified to ensure health and safety protocols, the City of Hermosa Beach has been working hard to re-create this beach festival featuring fine arts, crafts, music and food. Beginning each day at noon on September 4th through the 6th in downtown Hermosa Beach, this year’s celebration is promised to be “VERY cool and creative…serving our longtime Fiesta fans and providing an affordable, ultra-fun experience for individuals and families while supporting our local community”.
